Pepsi's Big Gamble: Ditching Super Bowl for Social Media

Why Pepsi Is Pulling Out of the Big Game and What It Stands to Gain

This year for the first time in 23 years, Pepsi will not have ads in the Super Bowl telecast. No Cindy Crawford, Britney Spears or Justin Timberlake. Instead it is redirecting the millions it has spent annually to the Internet. Pepsi has chosen to give away over $20 million in a social media play it is calling The Pepsi Refresh Project, debuting in 2010.

In Super Bowl ads from 1999 to 2009, Pepsi spent over $142 million to encourage consumers to drink the Pepsi brand. Pepsi's decision to pull its advertising from the Super Bowl telecast and concentrate on its Social Media strategy to try and create a movement will be the largest and most visible showdown between broadcast media and the Internet to date.

Is anybody else getting tired of their inbox being full of "Merry Christmas, we're glad you're our customer. Please buy something?"

I'm getting three or more emails a day from some places. A couple are are my favorite places to shop, but come on.

#Blackberry network problems are getting very frustrating.

The R.I.M. network has been horribly unreliable today. All day I thought it was my phone, but when I got home and got online, I noticed that #blackberry was trending on Twitter. Turns out that the whole network is having problems.

I think it's funny though how quickly we get used to our gadgets. I recieved my Blackberry for Christmas last year from my wife, and I remember thinking "I don't need that. What in the world do I need to do that requires a Blackberry?" Now, a year later, I'm writing a blog post on it, complaining about a one day network outage.

Now, I hope this posts.

UPDATE: I tryed to post this via my Blackberry three times last night with no luck. Woke up this morning and resent it. Apparently, all is well in Blackberry world now.

Just watched Snowblind on Discovery about blind musher Rachael Scdoris ( @Rachaeliditarod ) - Just awesome.

Rachael Scdoris is legally blind and races sled dogs. She lives in Bend, Oregon. I've heard her name and remember the updates on the local news, but not following the sport real closely, I didn't know anything about her. After watching the documentary, I am blown away. I can't imagine running the Iditarod with perfect sight, let alone being legally blind.

Is it me or has Letterman gotten funnier since his "scandal"?

I used to love watching David Letterman years ago, but since moving back from Texas a few years ago, my schedule and lifestyle haven't really made it an option except on rare occasions. When I was able to catch him, I have often thought that he has just gotten grumpier and less funny.

I've seen him a few times lately however, and it seems that he is funny again, very much like he used to be. I wonder if his "Sarah Palin" dust up this summer and his more recent "scandal" has humbled him a little bit?
